Does this sound like you?

What are you hoping to solve?

Most people come with one of these on their mind. Here is how a private session helps with each.

"My back is stiff or sore after long days sitting."

The NHS says to stay active, and that activities like pilates may help ease back pain. Pilates is slow, controlled and low impact, so it suits stiff backs without strain.

"I am coming back after an injury and I am afraid of hurting it again."

Every exercise is adapted to what your body can do today, with guidance from your GP or physiotherapist where needed.

"I was told to keep moving but I do not know how."

Sepideh builds a session around you, using the Reformer's springs for support or resistance, one movement at a time.

"I cannot keep up in a class."

There is no class to keep up with. It is just you and Sepideh, at your pace.

"I am not sure it is safe to start."

You may be asked to complete a health questionnaire, and where appropriate to get guidance from your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first.

"I want my strength and confidence back."

Controlled, supported movement can help you rebuild strength and confidence. Start with a £30 first session.

Back pain

Can Pilates help with back pain?

The NHS says back pain, particularly lower back pain, is very common and usually improves within a few weeks.

  • Its advice is to stay active and carry on with your daily activities
  • Not to stay in bed for long periods
  • It says activities like walking, swimming, yoga and pilates may help ease back pain

Pilates strengthens the deep muscles around your spine, hips and core with slow, controlled movement. It is low impact, so it suits stiff backs and old injuries. Source: NHS, back pain.

“My mobility has improved so much, my back pain is much more manageable, and I feel stronger, healthier and more confident in my body.”

When should I see a GP before starting?

The NHS says to see a GP if you have back pain and any of the following.

  • It does not improve after treating it at home for a few weeks.
  • It is stopping you doing your day-to-day activities.
  • You are worried about the pain or struggling to cope.
  • You have lost weight without trying to.
  • There is a lump or swelling in your back, or your back has changed shape.
  • It does not improve after resting, or is worse at night.
  • It is worse when sneezing, coughing or pooing, or comes from the top of your back between your shoulders.
Urgent

When is back pain urgent?

Call 999 or go to A&E if you have any of these:

  • Pain, tingling, weakness or numbness in both legs
  • A loss of feeling around your genitals or anus
  • Changes in your bladder or bowels
  • Chest pain, or the pain started after a serious accident

Ask for an urgent GP appointment or get help from 111 if the pain is severe and starts suddenly, is getting worse quickly, or you feel hot, cold, shivery or generally unwell. In many areas you can also refer yourself to NHS community musculoskeletal (MSK) services.

How does a session work if I am injured?

Every session is private, so it can take a more considered approach than a group class.

  • Exercises adapted to what your body can do today
  • Guidance from your GP or physiotherapist where needed
  • You may be asked to complete a health and exercise questionnaire
  • Tell Sepideh about any injuries, pain, limitations, conditions, surgery, medication or medical advice, and if anything changes

On the Reformer, the springs can add support to make a movement easier, or resistance to make muscles work. Pilates is not medical treatment, but controlled, supported movement can help you rebuild strength and confidence.

Questions

Back pain and injury: your questions

I have back pain or an injury. Can I come?

Sépilates offers sessions that support movement, strength, mobility, rehabilitation and recovery. They are not medical treatment, and where appropriate you may be asked to get guidance from your GP, physiotherapist or consultant before you start. Tell Sepideh about any injury or condition when you book.

Do I need to see a doctor first?

If your back pain has not improved after a few weeks, is stopping you doing your daily activities, or has any of the warning signs listed by the NHS, see your GP first. Where appropriate you may be asked for guidance from your GP, physiotherapist or consultant before you start.

Is this physiotherapy?

No. Sépilates is a private Pilates studio, and sessions are not medical treatment. Sessions are adapted to what your body can do today, with guidance from your GP or physiotherapist where needed.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on your goals, and Sepideh can advise you. A Class Pack, or a Membership of 4 or 8 sessions a month, makes regular sessions simple.

How much does it cost?

A Private 1:1 session is £55 for 50 minutes, and your first session is £30 if you are a first-time client.

What should I tell Sepideh before my first session?

Tell her about any injuries, pain or physical limitations, medical conditions, recent surgery, medication or medical advice that could affect your exercise, and let her know if anything changes.

How long will it take to feel a difference?

It depends on where you are starting from and what you want to change, and Sepideh can advise you after your first session. A good way to find out is the £30 first session, then the 3-session Starter Bundle (£135, used within 6 weeks), before you choose a Class Pack or a monthly Membership.
