Does this sound like you?

What are you hoping for from pregnancy Pilates?

Most people come with one of these on their mind. Here is how a private session helps with each.

"I want to stay active safely while I am pregnant."

The NHS says exercise is safe for you and your baby in pregnancy. Every session is private and adapted to your stage, your circumstances and any guidance from your midwife or GP.

"I want gentle strength for my back, hips and core."

Pilates strengthens the deep muscles around your spine, hips and core with slow, controlled, low impact movement. On the Reformer the springs can support a movement, so you are never forced.

"I am worried about doing the wrong thing."

That is why you email Sepideh first. Tell her you are pregnant and how you are feeling, and she will adapt your session. You may be asked for clearance from your healthcare professional.

"I want to feel prepared for birth and recovery."

The NHS lists preparing your body for giving birth and helping your recovery afterwards among the benefits of exercise in pregnancy.

"I have never done Pilates."

You need no experience. You learn the basics properly, one to one, with no one watching.

"I would love an hour that is just for me."

Fifty minutes that are entirely yours, in a calm, private studio, with focused breathing and no one to keep up with.

Safety first

Is Pilates safe during pregnancy?

The NHS says exercise is safe for you and your baby in pregnancy.

  • It is usually fine to keep doing activities you already do
  • Start any new exercise gently
  • Tell your instructor you are pregnant
  • Speak to your midwife first if you have a health condition or a complication

At Sépilates every session is private and adapted to your stage, your circumstances and any medical guidance. Please tell Sepideh if you are pregnant, think you may be, or have recently given birth. The benefits

Why exercise in pregnancy?

The NHS lists several reasons to keep active while you are pregnant.

  • Keeping fit
  • Preparing your body for giving birth and helping your recovery afterwards
  • Reducing the risk of some pregnancy-related conditions, like gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia
  • Improving your sleep, mood and mental health

Pilates is slow and controlled, so nothing is rushed or jarring, and it is low impact.

How much

How much exercise should I do when pregnant?

The NHS recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, including muscle strengthening. It is the same advice given to all adults.

  • Moderate means you can talk but not sing
  • You do not have to do it all at once
  • New to exercise? Start with 10 minutes a day and build up
  • If you cannot reach 150 minutes, do what you can. Any activity is better than none

A weekly private session is one simple way to build controlled strengthening work into your week.

In the studio

What is a prenatal Pilates session like?

A private 50-minute session, planned around where you are in your pregnancy and how you feel that day.

  • You work on the Reformer, the Cadillac or the Mat
  • On the Reformer the springs can add resistance, or support a movement
  • Taught one to one by an instructor with specialist pre and postnatal training
  • Nothing is rushed or jarring

In later pregnancy the NHS advises avoiding lying flat on your back for more than a few minutes, which is one reason a session planned for your stage matters. Pregnancy Pilates is not a medical treatment.

Staying safe

How to exercise safely in pregnancy

The NHS gives these simple rules for exercising safely in pregnancy.

  • Tell your instructor you are pregnant.
  • Drink water to stay hydrated.
  • Try to keep cool and wear the right clothing.
  • Stop if you feel uncomfortable, too hot or unwell.
  • Avoid activities where there is a risk of falling or bumping your tummy.
  • Do not exercise on an empty stomach, as this could make you faint.
